Herding

Starts: October 15, 2017
Cost: $52.00 per session

Our facility is set up to train beginner, nursery, novice and open level dogs and their handlers. We have our own sheep and 3 pastures of different sizes plus a round pen allowing dogs with different levels of experience to develop their skills for herding trials or farm work.

We train all breeds of dogs and require the dogs to be at least 10 months old for females and 1 year for males.

All Herding lessons are private.
Available weekly: currently no wait lists, email for an appointment.
We also have weekend herding clinics for beginners and advanced. These are affordable one day workshops. Dates will be posted shortly.

Watch video This video shows Julie working with Tess, a 11-month border collie. The puppy is learning about gathering, holding pressure, flanking and driving.

How to get started:

Contact us and make an appointment for instinct testing to see if your dog has the potential for success as a herding dog. The first session usually takes about 1 hour.

If your dog shows a keen desire to work stock you can book another session to start training. Subsequent sessions are approximately 35–40 minutes long.

Reactive Dogs

Start Date: November 5, 7pm
Location: 1070 Wain Road
Cost: $130.00 per day, tax included

Does your dog lunge and bark at the end of the leash when he sees another dog approach? Is he frightened of other dogs or people? Does he become overly aggressive in certain situations? Do you have a rescue dog that is proving difficult to rehabilitate?

Hundreds of dog owners are dealing with these issues. We have seen a 50% increase in the last 5 years of reactive dogs needing rehabilitation.

Julie Carter has trained hundreds of reactive dogs to become well-behaved and manageable, and live happy, healthy, active lives beyond the four walls of your home.

Imagine not feeling stressed when you take your dog for a walk. Our Reactive Dog Rehabilitation Program gets great results for building trust and non aggressive behaviour in your dog. In our Program, you will learn to understand the underlying issues causing your dog’s reactivity and to be calm and assertive as you help your dog overcome those issues.  He will become relaxed and well-behaved so that you can enjoy your dog, knowing you have helped him to live life to the fullest.

"West Coast Canine Academy has transformed several dogs we could no longer take due to their escalating behavioural issues which compromised the safety and well-being of our K9 guests. After completing rehabilitation with WCCA, these dogs have been welcomed back with Julie's approval and continue to be model citizens in our K9 family." — Tracy Wilkinson, K9 Country Cottage, Doggie Daycare and Boarding

Please note, we are very busy with this program and suggest getting on the waiting list as soon as problems arise.

Youth Programs

Do you love to play with your dog?  Try your hand at the canine sport of agility. Join our regular agility classes that run throughout the year or sign up for our kids summer camp. It's fun, you'll spend time outdoors, and you will bond with your dog. Your dog’s obedience skills will improve and will become more focused on you.

At West Coast Canine Academy, we are excited to offer a summer program for young people. Our instructor, Dorothy Jones, is a teacher by trade with years of experience working with young people. She loves working with kids and kids love her. Combine all that with Dorothy’s obedience and agility skills and you have one great youth program trainer. It is always such a thrill for us to watch kids learning about the sports of agility and sheep herding. By the end of the week-long program, they are working sheep in the field by themselves and running short agility sequences.

Participants also learn to make their own tuggy toy, try their hand at photographing or videoing the dogs at play, learn to train some fun tricks, work on basic obedience, begin to learn the foundations required to be able to run agility courses and try their hand at sheep herding with trained border collies.

For youth aged 10 years old and up. Dogs need to be at least 9 months old.
